In April 1925, a 21-year-old Alfonso John Lunghi departed Antwerp Harbour aboard S.S. Anversville for a three-week journey across the ocean to the Belgian Congo. Little did he know it but this would mark the beginning of a clerical career within a Belgium palm-oil plantation that would span thirty-three years.
'Dearest Mamma from Deepest Africa' is a collection of 'Fonso's detailed first hand accounts of his experiences, written in the form of letters to his family in London and is a rare and fascinating glimpse into the lives of not only the white men who were adjusting to this new way of life but also the Congolese locals as the European influence began to expand.
